How do I find my IP address?

An IP address is a unique number assigned to your computer whenever you connect to the internet. It acts just like a regular address, giving your computer a "location" online where all data can be sent to and from. Each time your router connects to your broadband you'll be given a new IP address.

What are internal and external IP addresses?

Your router has 2 IP addresses; one that it uses to speak with other computers over the internet (external) and another that it uses to speak with devices within your office (internal). All bOnline routers have an internal IP address of or by default.

How do I stop my IP address from changing?

Every time you connect to the Internet, you're assigned a unique IP address. This address only stays active whilst you're online and changes each time you connect, making it difficult to use your IP address with other services and devices.

A Dynamic Domain Name System, or DDNS, links your IP address to a fixed domain name to stop it from changing. You can then use this domain name to host a website or access your PC and network with a username and password.

To get DDNS you'll have to go to a DDNS service provider and download specialist software onto your computer. This software contacts the DNS service every time your IP address changes and updates the DNS database to reflect the change. That way, the connection you use to remotely access your computer stays active.

Please note: in order to use DDNS, you may also need to set up port forwarding on your router.
