This article explains how to run a speed test on your broadband connection and what the results mean.
What is a broadband speed test?
A speed test measures how fast data is uploaded and downloaded through your broadband connection. The result is shown in Megabits per second (Mbps). The higher the number, the faster your connection.
Mbps and MBps: what is the difference?
Megabits (Mb) measure internet download and upload speeds.
Megabytes (MB) measure the size of files, such as images or documents.
A Megabit is one eighth the size of a Megabyte. To download a 1 MB file in 1 second, your broadband speed would need to be 8 Mbps.
Tips before you run a speed test
For the most accurate results:
Use a wired connection. Connect your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable before running the test.
If testing over Wi-Fi, stay within three metres of your router with no large obstacles in between.
Run three tests on different days and at different times to get an average. This gives a more accurate picture of your broadband performance.
How to run a speed test
Go to a speed checker such as fast.com.
The test starts automatically and measures your download speed.
Wait for the test to complete. Your download speed in Mbps will be shown on screen.
