What is a test socket?

Modified on Tue, 13 Feb 2024 at 04:18 AM

Your test socket is located inside your master socket and is the point where the internal wiring in your house connects to the phone line outside. By plugging into your test socket, you bypass all the internal wiring in your office and connect your device directly to your phone line. This makes it the ideal point to test your internal wiring for faults.

How do I know if I have a test socket?

If your master socket has a removable faceplate then it contains a test socket. If your master socket doesn’t have a removable faceplate, it won’t have a test socket (we don’t recommend forcing it to check).

How do I use my test socket?
  1. You'll need a Phillips cross head screwdriver.

2. Using the screwdriver, carefully unscrew the faceplate.

3. Now gently pull the faceplate towards you.

4. With the faceplate removed, you'll see the test socket on the right hand side.

5. If you're testing your router, plug a microfilter into the test socket.

6. Then plug your router into the microfilter.

7. If your devices are working fine in the test socket, then the problem is probably in your office.

8. If none of your devices are working in the test socket, then it’s probably a fault in your local area.

Can I keep my devices connected to my test socket?

It’s not something we recommend. Connecting a device to your test socket will disconnect all the internal wiring in your office, meaning none of your other phone sockets will work. We only suggest you use it to test for faults.
