What is sync speed and how can I check it?

Your sync speed, also known as your access line speed, is the maximum speed at which your router can connect to the internet.

Sync speed is determined by how far away your office is from the local telephone exchange and it's not completely fixed; it can change each time you reboot your router and also be affected by factors like severe weather.

Your sync speed will always be higher than your actual (throughput) broadband speed because it's completely free of any signal interference. You can check the actual speed of your broadband using our speed checker.

How can I check my sync speed?

These instructions are only for customers with bOnline routers. If have an Openreach modem or your router isn’t from bOnline, please check your manual or the manufacturer’s support site for more details.

To get started, open your web browser and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar (just like opening a website).
Now you'll need to enter your router username and password. You can find these on the sticker on the back of your router.
Depending on your router, you'll see one of the screens below:

Select Summary from the options on the left.
Choose the green tick button next to DSL (Sync).
Next to DSL Line Speed, you’ll see your upload (up) and download (down) speeds.

Select Summary from the options to the left.
Now choose the ADSL Summary tab.
Next to ADSL line speed (kbps), you’ll see your upload (up) and download (down) speeds.

Choose Check my Internet Connection Status.
Under the Line Quality heading, you'll be able to see your Upstream line rate and your Downstream line rate.
