What does NGCS mean on my bill?

Modified on Fri, 20 Mar at 10:25 AM

If you see NGCS on your bOnline bill, this stands for Non-Geographic Call Service. This article explains what it means and why it may appear as a charge.

What is NGCS?

NGCS stands for Non-Geographic Call Service. Non-geographic numbers are phone numbers that are not linked to a specific location or area code. They are widely used by businesses, government departments, charities, and other organisations for services such as helplines, customer support, and information lines.

Which numbers are classed as non-geographic?

The following number ranges are classed as non-geographic:

  • 03 numbers - typically used by charities and public sector organisations
  • 05 numbers - used for corporate numbering and VoIP services
  • 07 numbers - mobile numbers
  • 08 numbers - including 0800 (freephone) and 0845/0870 (charged rate)
  • 09 numbers - premium rate numbers
  • 116 numbers - free helplines such as 116 123 (Samaritans)
  • 118 numbers - directory enquiry services

Why am I being charged for NGCS calls?

Calls to non-geographic numbers are not always included in your standard call package. Depending on the number type, they may be charged at a different rate and billed as usage charges on your invoice. If you see an NGCS charge on your bill, it means a call was made to one of the number ranges listed above that was not covered by your plan.
